Service Detail - Harley Baron was a member of the 8th reinforcement of 3rd Battalion. He sailed on the Runic on 9 September 1915 and joined his battalion at Gallipoli on 2nd November staying until the evacuation. He was returned to Egypt and then was sent to France where he arrived on 29 March 1916.
He was specially trained for and participated in raids on the line. He fought in the Battle of Pozieres and at Mouquet Farm. He was promoted to sergeant when, on the second night his battalion was in action at Pozieres, he volunteered to lead a party to procure rations.
At the end of August the battalion was transferred to Hill 60 in the Ypres Salient where he was killed by a sniper on 2nd September 1916. He was 22 years old. He is buried in Grave 1.L.12 at Larch Wood (Railway Cutting) Cemetery, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Members thoughts / recollections - Harley Baron was born and raised in Drummoyne. He attended Drummoyne Superior School and Hurlstone Agricultural College. He subsequently studied at Hawkesbury College to become a farmer before enlisting.
